The Simon Center Program
Program:

The Simon Center opened in January, 1990 as part of the Reston Area Child Care Consortium, a consortium of employers, community residents, parents, educators and varied professionals concerned about the child care needs in our community.  The Center is licensed and has been NAEYC accredited since August 2000.

The Center, located in the Cameron Glen Care Center, is a model example of high quality child care with an intergenerational component.  Our staff and children and the staff and residents of Cameron Glen and Sunrise Assisted Living interact formally and informally through planned intergenerational activities.

Staff receive ongoing in-service training and attend available workshops, courses, and conferences.  All staff have completed CPR and First Aid training.

The Robert E. Simon, Jr. Children’s Center offers an active and comprehensive program where children are respected and loved.  We would be delighted to have you as part of our Center.

The Center admits children and employs personnel without regard to race, color, creed, gender, religion or national origin.  The Center will not discriminate against children or employees with disabilities where reasonable accommodation can be made without imposing undue hardship.

All children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities throughout the day. The classrooms are set up with learning centers and the teachers will take advantage of all "teachable moments" during the day.  Low staff-child ratio ensures that individual attention is provided each child and their needs are met promptly.

Infants/Nursery Classroom:

The Nursery is designed to reflect a home-like feeling with an The Nursery has the BEST toys! eating area, a sleeping area, and a play area. Plants, pictures, music, cushions and chairs complete the feeling of a home environment. Infants are on totally individual schedules as requested by their parents. Plenty of stimulating toys (which are rotated monthly) are available for the babies and their caregivers to explore. Our staff understands the importance of talking and singing to the babies throughout the day and taking them outside for walks or playing on the toddler playground.

Toddlers/Juniors I, II & III:
The staff has great respect for the successes of our toddlers and two year olds. Fingerpainting is a collaborative effort Each new step is applauded and cheered.  These children are marching (or rather, toddling!) toward more independence each day, and need to have many choices of activities throughout the day.  Toys and equipment are selected which help develop gross and fine motor skills.  These children may also choose art activities, music and dance, or exploring books.  Toddlers and two year olds play hard and get tired and they need to be held and cuddled.  The staff is always ready to provide a loving lap to sit in.  The focus for Junior I is on large motor skill development and language development.

Pre-Schoolers/Senior I, II & Pre-Kindergarten/Senior III:
The pre-schoolers’ areas provide them with the opportunity to explore and choose activities as they see fit. Playing with dinosaurs Art, music, computers, gross and fine motor activities, animals, dramatic play, blocks, wood-working, science, and books are some of the interest centers that are in evidence around the rooms.  Our staff plans activities for the groups as well as for individual children in order to foster their development in all areas.  The focus for pre-schoolers is on real life skills, self help skills, and socialization with peers.  In Senior III, readiness skills are emphasized in all of the learning centers.
